What can I do? Shuold I try running a liveCD or similar on the same hw?

Indeed. This is a very good idea. You need to help us by trying
to find a configuration on your computer where the scanner actually
works. Using a Linux LiveCD like Ubuntu or Debian is a very good
start. This way you might be able to track down yourself which
particular package is causing the problem.

While we are happy to help and there might be still a bug somewhere
that you stumbled into, we need a bit more information to be able
to reproduce the problem. Otherwise it is not possible fix any
potential bugs.

Cheers,
Adrian
