Hello Steve, I had the same issue with hanging dpkg as well on my VM. However: on i386, not amd64, and I did not remove/purge any packages before. Also, I used aptitude safe-upgrade (instead of apt-get). After quite some time I killed the hanging dpkg process (which used 100% CPU) and apitude continued. I later issued 'dpkg --configure -a' (which rebuilt the man-db), 'apt-get -f install' and continued with 'aptitude full-upgrade'. The result in my case was a non-booting system because init segfaulted. I then restored the image from before the upgrade.
