Because we don't know what the users will use. I used xz as I don't mind waiting a bit when doing make -j4 modules_install and want to save as much space as possible, but I can very well imagine that gzip would be a good compromise between speed and compression ratio for many people. -- Tomáš Janoušek, a.k.a.
