I am working on switching Debian CI to using lxc instead of chroots, and
stambled on this issue.

I also cannot start ephemeral containers (not even as root) unless I
pass `--union-type aufs`. It works as expected on Ubuntu because the
Ubuntu kernel has overlayfs (the default union filesystem in
lxc-start-ephemeral) for ages, while the Debian kernel has not.

This issue will become moot once the upstream kernel 3.18 (which finally
has overlayfs) arrives in Debian, but under the stable Jessie kernel
this will be an issue.

Daniel, would you be willing to include a (Debian-specific) patch that
makes lxc-start-ephemeral use aufs by default? If you agree with that, I
volunteer to write and test such patch.
