Looking at #682481 shows this:

While I agree, that at the time, epiphany's security features were
lacking at best, a lot has changed since then. I could list the most
important changes, but fortunately Michael Catanzaro has already done
that:

http://blogs.gnome.org/mcatanzaro/2014/10/18/gnome-web-3-14/

Checking (for example) https://blog.fefe.de/ shows, that this does
indeed work; epiphany even tells me what the problem is when I click on
the broken lock symbol (Unknown CA, CA Cert Signing Authority).

I know that it's quite late in the release cycle, but I'd still
appreciate it, if you would consider switching back to epiphany for
jessie. I've personally done so a few months ago and I am more than
happy with the decision.

Best regards
