You can. You just have to prefix them with Ctrl-Z. (I know, because I
ran into the very same case, too. :-)

Back then I asked on IRC and got an answer quite quickly. But it's
also documented on e.g.

I though must admit that neither
chrome://conkeror-help/content/help.html nor
chrome://conkeror-help/content/tutorial.html mention this keybinding.

So from my point of view it's a pure documentation issue. (It's a
feature, not a bug! ;-)
