there is hope if someone steps up to figure out how it is made to work,
work around the issues and documents it. But I have given up, not using
GNOME any more, and so far none steps up.

Hmm, there is a NEWS file in /usr/share/doc/xmonad/NEWS.Debian.gz. Did I
do that wrong?
