Hi all, I had a problem that looked similar, but was caused by a strange interaction with other pacakges (probably xserver-xorg-video-nvidia).
On my side, on two desktop machines, I also had GNOME crashing on start after an update to Jessie. To my surprise this was caused by the presence of NVIDIA drivers or something in their dependancy chain, that were freshly installed during the updgrade, while the machine's graphic card were either Intel or AMD. Purging every package with nvidia in the name solved the problem (but I can not exclude that the problem was really solved by the autoremovals that came with the purge). Martin, if you have non-free enabled, maybe it is worth trying to purge the non-free nvidia drivers if they are pressent on your machines ?
