The subject says it.

I guess it could be a "feature", you don't want the button to launch
your mail-reader when there's no mail to read. But if the user wants the
button to run fetchmail or something, it's less useful.

I've only tested this with local mail spools, not other kinds of
mailboxes (POP, IMAP, etc.)
