Package: src:linux Version: 3.16.5-1~bpo70+1 Severity: important + do an installation that has the root file system on an LVM volume
+ once finished, install the backports kernel this removes initramfs-tools because the backports kernel uses dracut + make sure the backports kernel is actually installed + reboot to the backports kernel Booting gets stuck shortly after the logical volumes have been detected. I can plug in or remove USB devices and messages will show up on the console about the USB devices, so the machine isn't entirely dead. It's also possible to reboot with Ctrl+Alt+Del. However, booting remains stuck and doesn't proceed. Without LVM involved, and with VMs within LVs, the backports kernel boots and runs just fine. I suspect that there might be some modules omitted from the initramfs which are required to boot when the root fs is on a logical volume when the iniramfs image is created with dracut. On a side note: The Debian installer rescue mode needs a way to set up a pppoe connection. Rescueing was a major pita because one of the VMs handles the internet connection. And what if you need to start VMs when you're in rescue mode? -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64 (debian-ker...@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.6.3 (Debian 4.6.3-14) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.16.5-1~bpo70+1 (2014-11-02) ** Command line: root=UUID=fc6b504e-c28b-4bbd-9bd3-7a581841b03c ro console=hvc0 elevator=noop TERM=xterm ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: ** Model information IBM x3650-l2g, 2xE5420 ** Loaded modules: This is from dom0 with default kernel: Module Size Used by xt_physdev 12468 10 iptable_filter 12536 1 ip_tables 22042 1 iptable_filter x_tables 19118 3 ip_tables,iptable_filter,xt_physdev xen_netback 27122 0 xen_blkback 22112 0 xen_gntdev 13021 0 xen_evtchn 13012 4 xenfs 17724 1 bridge 70603 0 stp 12437 1 bridge ext2 59231 1 loop 22641 0 dm_crypt 22586 0 radeon 722295 1 ttm 53664 1 radeon drm_kms_helper 31370 1 radeon i5000_edac 12828 0 drm 183952 3 drm_kms_helper,ttm,radeon ibmpex 12806 0 ibmaem 13253 0 ipmi_msghandler 35965 2 ibmaem,ibmpex bnx2 67665 0 ics932s401 13077 0 power_supply 13475 1 radeon serio_raw 12931 0 acpi_cpufreq 12935 0 iTCO_wdt 17081 0 iTCO_vendor_support 12704 1 iTCO_wdt xen_pciback 37582 0 i2c_i801 16870 0 edac_core 35258 3 i5000_edac coretemp 12898 0 i2c_algo_bit 12841 1 radeon mperf 12453 1 acpi_cpufreq evdev 17562 2 i5k_amb 12923 0 i2c_core 23876 6 i2c_algo_bit,i2c_i801,ics932s401,drm,drm_kms_helper,radeon rng_core 12652 0 button 12937 0 processor 28149 1 acpi_cpufreq ioatdma 37396 0 thermal_sys 18040 1 processor shpchp 31293 0 dca 13240 1 ioatdma ext4 350763 1 crc16 12343 1 ext4 jbd2 62115 1 ext4 mbcache 13114 2 ext4,ext2 dm_mod 63645 24 dm_crypt microcode 30126 0 usbhid 36418 1 hid 81372 1 usbhid ses 13106 0 enclosure 13306 1 ses sd_mod 36136 3 crc_t10dif 12348 1 sd_mod uhci_hcd 26865 0 ehci_hcd 40249 0 usbcore 128741 5 ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd,usbhid usb_common 12354 1 usbcore aacraid 72148 2 scsi_mod 162321 3 aacraid,ses,sd_mod e1000e 133833 0 ** PCI devices: not available ** USB devices: not available -- System Information: Debian Release: 7.7 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64 depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.49 ii dracut [linux-initramfs-tool] 020-2 ii kmod 9-3 ii linux-base 3.5 ii module-init-tools 9-3 Versions of packages linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64 recommends: ii firmware-linux-free 3.2 Versions of packages linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64 suggests: pn debian-kernel-handbook <none> ii grub-pc 1.99-27+deb7u2 pn linux-doc-3.16 <none> Versions of packages linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64 is related to: pn firmware-atheros <none> pn firmware-bnx2 <none> pn firmware-bnx2x <none> pn firmware-brcm80211 <none> pn firmware-intelwimax <none> pn firmware-ipw2x00 <none> pn firmware-ivtv <none> pn firmware-iwlwifi <none> pn firmware-libertas <none> pn firmware-linux <none> pn firmware-linux-nonfree <none> pn firmware-myricom <none> pn firmware-netxen <none> pn firmware-qlogic <none> pn firmware-ralink <none> pn firmware-realtek <none> pn xen-hypervisor <none> -- debconf information: linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64/postinst/mips-initrd-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64: linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64/postinst/depmod-error-initrd-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64: false linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64/prerm/removing-running-kernel-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64: true -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
