Those or more general tests were done a few days back but still no problem.

peter@dalton:~$ dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/dev/null
2880+0 records in
2880+0 records out
1474560 bytes (1.5 MB) copied, 47.5503 s, 31.0 kB/s
peter@dalton:~$ su
Password: 
root@dalton:/home/peter# dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/dev/null
2880+0 records in
2880+0 records out
1474560 bytes (1.5 MB) copied, 48.2657 s, 30.6 kB/s

Can you put a boot diskette in a drive and make a counter-example to 
my hypothesis?
sudo qemu-system-i386 -fda /dev/fd0 -vga std -boot a
