The symptoms were different, but perhaps this is a similar problem to that fixed for i386 in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=769265
There the issue was that the customizations to Marpa::R2's build for the Debian build mixed up the C compiler flags, so that the target was identified as both 32-bit and 64-bit. (This is a summary by a Debian-ignoramus, so you'll want to consult that bug's log to see what was *really* going on.)
