Ah, that explains a lot. Thank you for that output! I fixed that in my
8.1 development version, will upload it soon. I'll also fix it for 7.4
and 8.0 soon.

Right, the init script does not do that any more. The postrm script
needs the same check to not choke on random directories. in
/etc/postgresql/version.
