Try deleting and reinstalling the source tree.  I've sometimes had to do
that; something seems to get confused and not cleaned up properly between
runs.

If that still doesn't work, could you look at the config.log output for
"rlim" and see if you can figure out why all of the probes for the
different possible rlim structures failed?  Or paste that portion of
config.log into a mail message so that I can look it over?

I've never tried to build 1.4 on woody or with a compiler that old, so I
don't know if OpenAFS can deal with it, but I don't know of any changes
that would necessarily break gcc 3.0.
