I have to admin I'm a bit puzzled at this. Looking around I can find an old thread from 2011 [1] with no real conclusion. And for example it's seems unclear if it should be set by the DM or by the session script itself. LightDM apparently [2] supports setting that variable if it's set in the Xsession .desktop file, I'll check that and report back. Unfortunately it won't work with the “default” session (which uses the Debian alternatives system), so maybe the patch is still useful.
