Hey Sam, Osamu.

In version 2.5.5-1, Debian has integrated the dovecot-auth patch[0] into
it's maildrop packages.
Osamu who maintains the package now decided do drop it because of it
being unmaintained, which may be in the long-term a security problem
(i.e. no one is looking after that code).

I think we've talked about this before, but I don't recall the exact
outcome and maybe the situation has changed in the meantime, but do you
see any chances to merge the patch upstream?

Dovecot is surely one of the biggest IMAP/POP3 servers in the FLOSS and
the commercial world and people who would like to use maildrop with it
would benefit probably a lot from having that patch integrated upstream.

Or do you see any other chances to make dovecot-auth directly working in
maildrop anytime soon?

I am considering it. This is not a lot of code, but for me to take responsibility for it, since nobody else cares about it, I'll need to slowly pick it apart.

Furthermore, I would like to believe that if there was, indeed, any demand for this kind of integration, someone would surely be willing to maintain this integration piece. Nature abhors a vacuum, so if this is now abandoned, for whatever reason, someone would surely be found, to take over.
