It's only two keystrokes on a UK keyboard, but yes, it's not very
helpful. I'm pretty sure Jed was written by an American who saw this
as a little-used key suitable for this purpose :-)

The man page confirms that backquote is used to insert the next key
'as is' rather than interpreting it as a command key of any sort. So
it is handy for inserting control characters. e.g the 'real TAB' you
wanted would be [backquote][ctrl[I]], or for putting newline chars
into search/replace.

I presume it's possible to configure the escape key to be something
other key.
