Your suggestion worked fine. After applying the patch, I can load nvidia module (amd64 kernel). With my card "GeForce FX Go5700" it appears to work fine at present.

1.0.7174 requires a patch to make it work. I haven't included it yet but
you can find the amd64 one at

Kernels about 2.6.12-rc require it.
You could also try 1.0.7676 from
http://people.debian.org/~rdonald/nvidia
if they support your card.
