Posting ok.slrn fatal error: Unable to create newsgroup description file: /var/lib/slrn/newsgroups.dsc To resolve I had to change the group ownership of /var/lib/slrn from root to news and give the news group write permission in this directory: drwxrwxr-x 2 root news 4096 Oct 10 08:52 slrn/ This resulted in slrn successfully downloading and writing the descriptions: slrn 1.0.2 Loading /usr/share/slrn/slang/slrn.sl Reading startup file /etc/news/slrn.rc.
