For the record: Those test errors were unrelated to phpunit4 (and even were present with phpunit3). It was a problem in src:symfony itself and is now fixed in the latest SNAPSHOT build, which is 2.3.20+dfsg-1~3.gbpc18d7a (details on pkg-php-pear list [1]). Thanks a lot, Prach, for your help.
