Hi David, if you want to use groups to arbitrate access to (external) hard disks, that's fine and you can do that via custom udev rules in /etc/udev/rules.d. Unfortunately this is rather inflexible and not a scalable and dynamic solution which works out of the box. So this is not something we can ship in the udev package. The canonical solution to have dynamic access to (external) storage devices is udisks2.
