I found some code here:
/var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-3.16-2-amd64.postinst

This will generate (overwrite) a new initrd.img-3.16-2-amd64 and make a symlink 
with absolute path to it:
root@somesystem:/# dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-3.16-2-amd64

The symlink is not overwriten if there is already a proper symlink.
