Hi, I'm also running TBL on Debian Jessie & Wheezy, with AppArmor enabled, using different window managers.
I can't, however, reproduce that bug. I have never seen it actually. The start-tor-browser executable is part of the downloaded Tor Browser Bundle itself. Would you be able to run ./start-tor-browser --debug and give more output, please? I am simply not quite sure about the empty variable assertion.
