FWIW, I experienced this with a freshly installed wheezy system this week.

I used the latest wheezy netinst image to install a single LV to a micro-SD
card, and the resulting system had lvm2 2.02.95-8.

When the system boots, the VG and LV are present, but not active. Making a
change similar to Bjoern's (I needed to sleep for a few seconds before
activating the VG, not after) allows the system to boot without manual
intervention.
