apt-get install digikam works fine here on my plain Sarge
installation. Pulls in libimlib2-dev and all other dependencies
without problem.

Wild guess: Maybe nonmatching libimlib2 and libimlib2-dev
pkgs, one from another repo that's no longer in sources.list????

Do you have (m)any other deb archives in your sources.list
beside the official archives of debian? Which?

What's the output of

        apt-cache policy digikam libimlib2-dev libimlib2

did you try

        apt-get install libimlib2-dev
        apt-get install libimlib2-dev digikam

this often shows what's wrong. (
