Package: debian-faq Version: update answer to question 5.8 about checking if it's a Debian system and version Severity: wishlist
Today, the easiest way to find which distribution and version currently running is probably to use `lsb_release -a`. Moreover it's standard over distributions so it will work if it's not Debian. For example on testing/jessie system, the output is: No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Debian Description: Debian GNU/Linux testing (jessie) Release: testing Codename: jessie I suggest to remove the 2 first paragraphs and replace them by this one: ### start ### In order to make sure that your system has been installed from the real Debian base disks, use the 'lsb_release -a' command. It will display the name of the distribution (in Distributor ID field) and the version of the system (in Release and Codename fields). ### end ### Note: english is not my native tongue so the text could probably be improved. -- System Information: Debian Release: jessie/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (900, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 -- Imprimez ce message en A2 et en couleur au moins 500 fois!
