I've explored a bit further. This thread (http://sourceforge.net/p/maxima/mailman/maxima-discuss/thread/CAPGiC74KNrZd6oFhGdaDhWOf1CHutivagyEC7DwPEUPNwBiioA%40mail.gmail.com/#msg32798070) points out that imaxima needs the latex package breqn, which in turn requires a file called cmbase.sym, which is conspicuously absent from the version of texlive-latex-recommended current in jessie.
I've downloaded the curent CTAN breqn.zip, compiled it and installed it by manual copy in the npormal location fpor breqn. Thos fixes thje problem with imaxima. This bug can now be closed (but I don't know how to do this). I'll file a bug against texlive-latex-recommended for breqn.
