Tomasz, I finally got my OpenSUSE 13.1 running again, so I have some more information.
When I type "gnome-shell --version" I get: GNOME Shell 3.10.1 When I use yast and search for nouveau, I get: libdrm.nouveau2 2.4.46-3.2.2 xorg-x11-driver-nouveau 1.0.9-3.1.2 When I type "more /proc/version" I get: Linux version 3.11.6-4-desktop ( geeko@buildhost ) (gcc version 4.8.1 20130909 [gcc-4_8-branch revision 202388] (SUSE Linux) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 30 18:04:56 UTC 2013 (e6d4a27) Bob Michael ----- Original Message ----- From: remich...@comcast.net To: 758...@bugs.debian.org Cc: "Nitecki, Tomasz" <t...@tnnn.pl> Sent: Friday, August 29, 2014 9:31:22 PM Subject: screen resolution reverts to minimum when not selected by KVM ----- Original Message ----- Tomasz, I have 4 dmesg files attached. Two are at the start of a session, right before I switched the KVM to another machine. The other two are after a while when I switched the KVM back to this machine, found it in low res mode, and did another dmesg. The before and after files are identical except for an additional line in the after file that looks like this: [ 869.413400] [drm] nouveau 0000:05:00.0: no native mode, forcing panel scaling This happens for the Gnome desktop, and for the Gnome Classic desktop. I installed KDE and ran its desktop overnight and it did not go into low resolution mode even after more than 8 hours. I attached its dmesg file also, but there is only the before file since it did not go into low res mode. I loaded fvwm and ran it overnight and it did not go into low resolution mode either. I tried to ssh into this machine from a Debian 6 machine, but it failed to connect. I have not used ssh in 5 or 6 years and must not have something set up right. However, after a low res black screen, I was still able to ping the affected machine from a nearby Windows box. So it was still alive. But since I could not ssh into it, there was no way I could try to restart the X server. I am not sure how to get a gnome log. I found a program /usr/bin/gnome-system-log and ran it, which produced a window. I selected the text, and copied it to a file, which I have attached (gnome.log). It looks to me more like a system log than a gnome log. But it has 2 of the "panel scaling" messages in it. If there is another gnome log, perhaps you can tell me how to get it. I hope this information helps. If there is more you want me to try, let me know. When I type "gnome-shell --version" I get: GNOME Shell 3.4.2 When I type "dpkg -l |grep nouveau" I get: ii libdrm-nouveaula:amd64 2.4.40-1~deb7u2 amd64 Userspace interface to nouveau-specific kernel DRM services -- runtime ii xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.1-5 amd64 X.Org X server - - Nouveau display driver This is running on an MSI Z87-G43 motherboard with an Intel i5-4440 CPU @ 3.10GHz with 16 GB of memory. When I type "more /proc/version" I get: Linux version 3.2.0-4-amd64 ( debian-ker...@lists.debian.org ) (gcc version 4.6.3 (Debian 4.6.3-14) #1 SMP Debian 3.2.60-1+deb7u3 My openSUSE is on another disk so I will have to gets its version and send them later. Are there any suspicious messages in dmesg or gnome log after the screen resolution drops to 600x480? Can you please attach them both? 2. Can you ssh to an affected machine after it black outs (that is after trying to reset the resolution)? If so, are there any error messages in dmesg or gnome log? Please attach them if you can connect. 3. If you restart X server after the screen resolution drops, does it get back to normal? 4. Did you (or can you) try if this problem also occurs while using any other desktop environment? Regards, T.
