Scratch that, in order to work around another bug, I deleted and then attempted to recreate a VPN connection - the configuration dialog that appears is almost completely disabled. The only interesting thing coming out of stdout is lots of:

When the VPN connected it failed to set up a route to the subnet at the other end but I guess thats another story...
