Greetings! Just s little more info -- with readline disabled, maxima appears to be reading the input with read-char-no-hang, otherwise with read-char. There are interspersed calls to peek-char and unread-char in both cases. Just in case someone else recognizes what's going on -- I don't see how maxima would know anything about readline. I don't think I'll have time to look at this further for a while.
