Sorry, I forgot to also follow up to this bug on that one.
Which d-i images did you try?  Since afaik this is still present
in the dailies, and the patch to fix it hasn't been applied yet.

The problem is that syslinx >= 5 changed to using ELF images,
and the ldlinux.c32 needs to be in root directory, and the other
.c32 images either need to be there too or have a PATH set for
the location where they will be found.

If they aren't then it all falls over much the same as any other
executable would if its shared libs (or ld.so) aren't found.

I sent to patch for d-i to #756275 which fixes this, but I'm not
entirely sure how that might also effect the pxelinux package
itself or other users of it.  You might want to take a peek at
that and see if you have a different suggestion or if there are
similar changes that also need to happen elsewhere too.
