Same problem here,

In my case dpkg-reconfigure worked yesterday but today ends with:

Stopping OpenLDAP: slapd.
Moving old database directory to /var/backups:

Backup path /var/backups/unknown-2.4.23-7.2.ldapdb exists. Giving up...

And no change is applied. I had to remove /var/backups/unknown... and after
that it worked as exected. Note that even after a completete
"remove --purge" dpkg-reconfigure was stuck.

I don't believe this is the same bug as the one you replied to, but I agree that this behaviour is not ideal. In fact the script includes code to generate a unique backup path using the current date and time, but it's not used because dpkg-reconfigure passes the previously configured version which gets used instead. I'm turning this into a new bug report to track that. Thanks for reporting it!

thanks,
Ryan
