Odd, I've never had a single degree increase in temperature. I see a lot of
these in my syslog, but I've never received any notifications over
smart-notifier for this.

smart-notifier is a pretty dumb tool -- it just conveys any notifications that
smartd calls /etc/smartmontools/run.d/60smart-notifier with (which are
incidentally also mailed to you if you configured it so), so there is quite
likely a configuration for smartd.conf for this, and it's quite likely that you
passed a temperature threshold, in which case, smartd would be right in
notifying you about this.
