I am running an up-to-date installation of jessie and recently found that aptitude does not install the new init package automatically, though it is marked as essential. # #after aptitude update # LC_ALL=C aptitude full-upgrade No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed. 0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0 B of archives. After unpacking 0 B will be used. Init is a metapackage that assures that the system has an init system. It has recently been introduced in jessie. Since such a system is installed, nothing is broken. However, I find this behaviour of aptitude does not match up with the user's expectations, it's a bit worrisome and I doubt that it is intended. Also, apt-get dist-upgrade would install init immediately. Still, I cannot judge how severe this problem is (or whether it is severe at all), so I set the severity to normal. I am not sure whether this bug is related to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=216768, but from what I can tell people had the opposite issue in this bug (packages being marked essential, though they were not) because of following several releases whereas I only follow jessie.
