I can't reproduce the issue with the current sid version of ark.

What I tested:
I searched a random rar file on the web [1], and it caused unrar-free to
segfault, the unrar command points to unrar-free. Using ark, it lists the
content but can't extract the file (no error is shown).

I tested rar file [2], and unrar-free fails to uncompress it (without
segfaults), using ark, has the same behavior as before, doesn't extract,
no error message is shown, but in any case, no crashes.

So, the free rar support works badly, that's granted, but none of this seems
to be the issue described by the submitter.

Please, if you can still reproduce the issue provide a small rar file to test
it.
