Actually it didn't. Or at least, it was only a partial fix. Apparently there was one problem where wipefs -a did not actually remove *all* signatures when more than one was found. The other problem is that it still refuses to remove an msdos partition table, so when you try to format the whole disk ( rather than just a partition ) in g-d-u, you still get this error.
