Sorry I had not realized that you were packaging version 1.10.4 when I
uploaded my NMU. Of course packaging the new version is the right thing
to do, but I did not try it since it was too invasive for an NMU. Should
I cancel my NMU?

I could fix it by adding the following two lines in debian/rules:
override_dh_autoreconf:
dh_autoreconf ./autogen.sh
Apparently the autogen.sh contains the right magic to make all this
work.
