Just to clarify, I had *just* become aware of the problem right before your bug report came in. I recognize that an accidental soname change is too serious to wait on. Also, as a side note, I would have caught this with lintian but there is a lintian override on the library name not matching the soname. The reason for the override is that vips installs two shared libraries, which confuses lintian. I tightened the lintian override so that it doesn't warn now but would have caught the soname change. I'm going to try to figure out a suitable bug on lintian to report. I think the soname/library name warning is too strong right now and find myself overriding it frequently for legitimate reasons.
