Dear Maintainer,

Recent builds of SDL 1.2 always use the X server's backing store, when
the server supports it. Servers with compositing always say they
support the backing store. However, backing store updates can't be
synced with vertical blanks, so this leads to video tearing in SDL
applications.

The upstream bug report is
  <https://bugzilla.libsdl.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2383>
but they say they're not going to fix it in 1.2 directly.

Previously, users had to set the SDL_VIDEO_X11_BACKINGSTORE
environment variable to get this behavior. Other distributions are
patching SDL to restore this behavior and work around the problem:

Please consider a similar approach. Thank you.
