The only rdep in unstable is now centerim which doesn't look like it will get fixed soon (and is no longer part of testing). I think it's okay to remove automake1.4 now. I also filed bugs for autoconf2.13_2.13-62 [1] (Recommends: automake1.4) and buildcross_0.0.13 [2] (Depends: automake1.4, but in experimental).
