I ran into this problem a few days ago: After upgrading from a 3.2 to a 3.13 kernel, restarts hung, and the pstree console output always had amd in the list.
Looking closer at /etc/init.d/am-utils, like the bug submitter I found parts of the stop routine positively crufty, and thought about changes when I came across this bug report. The patch that goes with it nicely stops amd where it had hung before, clearing a major obstacle to rolling out a 7.4 system tonight.
