For the record: I tried to cherry-pick the two upstream commits that seemed relevant (according to their changelog), namely (e01e93b0f and a06818de2), and apply it on top of the 3:6.03~pre1+dfsg-1~bpo60+1 package we have in Tails. The resulting ISO displays the syslinux menu just fine, but fails to load the Linux kernel in my libvirt/QEMU test environment. So, I'm giving up on the cherry picking attempts, and we'll live with this regression until -pre5 or later is uploaded to Debian.
