It /could/ be the latter. Something tells me that this isn't going to be easy
to find and fix; I don't have a suitable card for testing. (I used to have
one; I don't recall having any problems with it and the OSS drivers.)

That looks reasonably sane, from what I remember.

It may be worth mentioning there too, but before you do, I think that you
should at least check kernel 2.6.14.<latest> and possibly an ALSA development
snapshot.
