No, this doesn't include the fix because I wanted to see if there were
other opinions about how to kill the process

There are probably two ways to fix it:

a) Adding this argument to those lines:

    --pidfile $PIDFILE

b) Deleting those lines completely.  In the event that the earlier
attempt to stop asterisk fails, then there is a risk that it keeps
running - but I think we can live with that, most people know how to
check for and kill a stray process manually and it is a little bit too
aggressive for the init script to be doing that.
