Package: ppp
Version: 2.4.6-2
Severity: wishlist

If one does

pppd default-asyncmap defaultroute lcp-echo-failure 7 lcp-echo-interval 50 mtu
1492 noaccomp noauth noipdefault noproxyarp persist plugin rp-pppoe.so
usepeerdns user ...@....net pty 'pppoe -I eth0 -T 80 -m 1452' eth0

One will only get

Plugin rp-pppoe.so loaded.
Couldn't open the /dev/ppp device: No such file or directory
Linux kernel does not support PPPoE -- are you running 2.4.x?

as a warning, instead of

Couldn't open the /dev/ppp device: No such file or directory
pppd: You need to create the /dev/ppp device node by
executing the following command as root:
        mknod /dev/ppp c 108 0

Which is a much better warning seen in other cases (without any pppoe
stuff on the command line.)

It could be the key to getting users back on line instead of having to
wait for a trip back to town, etc.

No I don't know why after some package upgrades /dev/ppp went missing.
