Before advocating this change upstream, I'd really like to see that
magic in action. The Hash::SharedMem module is not available in Debian
yet, so after building it on my own I could verify the little-endian
rules on amd64.

The big-endian rules, besides looking strange to me, remain an open
cause. The qemu program for mips, sparc, and powerpc is broken in one
or another way, different story. The module fails to build on native
hppa and powerpc, and also on armel, with the following or variants:

Error:  Can't load
'/tmp/libhash-sharedmem-perl-0.002/blib/arch/auto/Hash/SharedMem/SharedMem.so'
for module Hash::SharedMem:
/tmp/libhash-sharedmem-perl-0.002/blib/arch/auto/Hash/SharedMem/SharedMem.so:
undefined symbol: __sync_bool_compare_and_swap_8 at
/usr/lib/perl/5.14/DynaLoader.pm line 184.

Could you shed any light on this?

    Christoph
