just for the record, you don't send emails via IMAP. If you are talking
about sending emails than you mean SMTP.
Can you please make some logs about the activity if Icedove while trying
to send emails?
Without some logs it's impossible to say that's going wrong.

You have verified that the login data for SMTP are correct? If so how?
The same account data works with another email client?
This happen to if you start in safe-mode?

You can and should make a copy of your current profile.

  cp -a ~/.icedove ~/.icedove-backup

After this you can change what ever you want. If something is going
wrong just delete the current working profile and copy your backup back.
