I'm having the same issue as Zarg. Since updating to Icedove
24.4.0-1~deb7u1 it fails to run as well. In my case Lightning was not
installed via the package manager but rather from the Mozilla addon
website. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/lightning/
$ icedove
