At the moment, only one VPN of each type can be active at the same time. Eg, you *should* be able to have an OpenVPN and a vpnc at the same time already, though I haven't tried that. But you cannot yet have two VPN connections of the same type simultaneously. That's a limitation in the core NM (which I hope to remove quite soon) as well as a UI decision in nm-applet to make the NM limitation clearer.
