I like your idea of specifying the command line
that elicited the bug.

It's

    $ /usr/bin/qemu -hda /<path>/<file>.raw -m 512 -localtime -no-acpi -cdrom 
/dev/cdrom

I think the "-M" options I tried were

    isapc

    pc-i440fx-1.4

    pc-i440fx-1.5

    pc-i440fx-1.6

    pc-i440fx-1.7

I expected pc-i440fx-1.6 would work because it was
close to the version of qemu that did (1.6.0+dfsg-1+b1).

Maybe somewhere between versions 1.6.0+dfsg-1+b1
and 1.7.0+dfsg-8 the new USB 3.0 code was
accidentally added to pc-i440fx-1.6.
